The war of the tomatoes

If you watched the 1989 Michael Douglas-Kathleen Turner classic, The War of the Roses (an absolute must-watch if youre into dark comedy or domestic violence :)),you would agree that some battles can get nastier than they ought to.

How often do you see merchants and deals show up on one dealsite and then a couple of days later you see the same deal on another site ? Too often, if you ask me. I have regular deal dejavu as I go through deal alerts in my inbox every morning. Remember this post a few weeks back ? It's back on Groupon here !

And some vendors are repeat offenders. Mission Minis, a cupcakery/bakery in San Francisco is one such case. According to my inbox, and Yipit, they have now appeared on Gilt City, Groupon, Google Offers, Bloomspot, the whole 9 yards. And why this deluge of deals ?
The bakery was shut down by the department of health in 2010 because they didnt have a real restaurant permit.
They ended up doing all those deals and appearing on Food Network twice since then. Awwright, they know how to hustle.

How about the exact deal on the same day for the same event ?
LivingSocial and Groupon are going to head-to-head and locking horns on this one. Or maybe it's just cosmic coincidence that today they both decided to advertise for a Tomato Festival coming up in Pleasanton on Saturday October 1st.
Groupon deal: Tomato-Based Food Fight with Live Music ($60.98 Value)
Living Social deal: Admission to October 1 NorCal Tomato Battle and One Beer

Both deals offer the same spiel. Admission includes: Access to live music and the beer garden, participation in the Tomato Battle, one free beer.

The difference ? The LivingSocial one is $25, the Groupon one costs $30. Why would someone want to pay the extra $5 ?
I would love to get the inside scoop on whether this deal juxtapostion is intentional. Kudos to the event organizers that managed to two-time LivingSocial and Groupon. If I was the Groupon salesman that drafted this deal with the merchant, I would NOT be happy.

I'm pretty excited to watch the "deals bought" counter at the end of the day to see who won the tomato deal war. This battle's going to get pretty nasty.

It's raining deals, hallejulah, it's raining deals. And tomato juice.
